J.S. Hovnanian & Sons Celebrates 45th Anniversary

Mt. Laurel, NJ – Gasoline was 25 cents a gallon.  The average yearly income was $5,880 and homes were selling between $9,000 and $18,000.  The year was 1964 when the late Jirair S. Hovnanian founded J.S. Hovnanian & Sons.  At that time, Mr. Hovnanian was focused on building single-home subdivisions.

Forty-five years later, Jirair’s two sons, Stephen and Peter and his grandson, Garo lead the company.  Over four generations of building excellence, J.S. Hovnanian & Sons has diversified, developing and managing residential and non-residential products including office and industrial parks and neighborhood and regional shopping centers.

“Even after 45 years, original homeowners say they are proud to live in a J.S. Hovnanian & Sons home,” said Stephen Hovnanian.  “We attribute this to the strong foundation laid by our father who paid attention to every building detail while emphasizing the need to provide the highest degree of customer service.”

Innovation and diversification are the driving factors behind the company’s success in 2009. On the residential side, the company has six active communities throughout South Jersey and Delaware while their commercial portfolio includes retail and commercial developments including: Towne Crossing in Burlington and Towne Square and Twin Ponds Executive Campus in Mt. Laurel.

“J.S. Hovnanian & Sons leads the industry with the most cutting-edge technology in home building,” said Janet Weber, resident of J.S. Hovnanian & Sons’ Mews at OakRidge community in East Greenwich. “The design, quality and craftsmanship of their products complemented by the excellent customer service make me a repeat customer.  This is the second home I’ve purchased from J.S. Hovnanian & Sons and I love it!”

“Diversification is the name of the game,” said Peter Hovnanian.  “Our experience in the marketplace has led us from a company first known as a homebuilder, to a company that, with the right plan, can develop a product that satisfies a whole host of needs.”

“People ask us all the time about what we think about today’s marketplace and just how we’re doing,” said Stephen Hovnanian. “The answer is, we’re doing fine.  People need places to live and low mortgage rates have made it the ideal time to buy a new home. We have been through difficult times and weathered three housing recessions.  We will use our experience and know-how to navigate this difficult period.  Our customers expect that from us.”

The owners stress that they have not cut corners in selling new home products.  They have revised and revamped plans to make homes appealing and affordable – realizing buyers expect value at the time of their closing, but want that value to continue to increase over time.

Marian Aditya, another repeat buyer, says customer satisfaction is the cornerstone of the company’s business.  “J.S. Hovnanian & Sons is committed to satisfying the customer.  They know the wants and needs of buyers and do everything in their power to accommodate them.”

“We know our customers,” said Peter.  “We know what they want and we know how to reach them.  Our buyers are sophisticated and educated, that is why we have developed a web presence, second to none, so we can answer any questions our buyers may have with the click of a mouse.”

The company has adopted the phrase, “45 years of quality you can trust,” to encapsulate their commitment to being the best today and in the future. The Hovnanian Family will continue to build on the rock solid foundation established back in 1964.

Known for their philanthropic nature, Stephen and Peter follow Jirair’s legacy of giving back to the community.  They donate of themselves by providing leadership and mentoring to many individuals, and support community organizations throughout the region.  They are committed to enriching the lives of all who live in the communities they build.  In doing so, they built a brand-new home for a deserving Camden family as part of the ABC’s Extreme Makeover:  Home Edition in 2007.

“Here’s to the next 45 years,” they say.
